Acclimate - getting a plant used to a new environment slowly over time
Annual - plant, typically flowering, that completes its entire life cycle in one year. Needs to be re-planted annually.
Biennial - plant with a two-year life cycle. Generally produces flowers and seeds in its second year.
Cool-season annual - a perennial that is planted in a non-native climate after peak heat in Summer or in early Fall and that will typically come back in Spring, but that might die in the Summer heat and need to be replanted each year
Dead-head - to remove spent flowers from a plant to make room for new flowers to grow. Helps to prevent the plant from wasting resources on dead blooms
Dormancy - a natural period of little to no growth (often wintertime)
Dormant - a plant that is in dormancy
Growth medium (or just medium) - what you are growing a plant in, such as soil, perlite, moss, water, etc.
Hardy Perennial - good luck killing this guy, comes back each year
Harvest - to remove produce from plants once ripe or in bloom
Host Plant - where pollinators such as butterflies lay their eggs
Hydroponic plant - a plant grown hydroponically, aka in a hydroponic system
Hydroponic system - a garden / vessel that uses only water, nutrients and light, not soil, to grow a plant
Hydroponics - the practice of growing hydroponic plants
Invasive - will spread rapidly if not contained, and will kill off other plants that are competing for resources such as space, sunlight, nutrients, etc.
Migrate - move a plant from one environment to another, usually involving acclimating the plant
Nectar - the stuff that dreams are made of. This is what pollinators such as butterflies and hummingbirds eat.
Over-wintering - bringing a plant indoors in colder months. Can also refer to other treatments for winter, such as covering plants, wrapping containers in blankets, inducing dormancy, etc.
Perennial - plant that lives for multiple years in its natural habitat
Pet friendly - non-poisonous and non-toxic if touched or ingested by pets and children
Propagation - a method, natural or induced, by which baby plants are made or a plant is divided to produce a new plant
Re-pot - uprooting a plant and moving it from one container into another (usually larger) container
Seed pod - in hydroponics, refers to the growth medium and cage that seeds are placed in and is then suspended in water - usually a "growth sponge" that won't dissolve and helps to form roots
Tender Perennial - perennial that is often treated as an annual in climates other than its natural habitat (ie. won't survive the winter)
Transplant - uprooting a plant and moving it from one growth medium and/or environment to another
