Adopted:
2025-08-10
Size:
Height: 8 - 12"
Pollinator:
Shelter: Offers shelter for caterpillars looking for a safe place to form their chrysalis and provides adult butterflies with a place to hide from predators and bad weather.
Toxic:
Non-toxic, Pet friendly
Care:
Light:
Give at least six hours of direct sunlight per day. While it can tolerate partial shade, its color may be less intense.
Water:
Drought-tolerant. Overwatering is the most common issue, which can lead to fungal problems and root rot.
Humidity:
Prefers a dry climate. May brown in high humidity.
Temperature:
Thrives in cooler temperatures of 50 - 65 degrees. Can tolerate other conditions but may brown in high heat.
Soil:
It is adaptable to a variety of well-draining soil types, including sandy and rocky conditions, but will not tolerate waterlogged soil, which can lead to root rot. The ideal soil pH is between 5.5 and 7.5.
Fertilizer:
A light application of a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the early spring is sufficient. In many cases, no supplemental fertilizer is needed.
Hardiness:
USDA hardiness zones 4 - 10. It is a cool-season grass, meaning its most active growth occurs in the spring and fall.
Pruning:
Shear back the foliage in the early spring before new shoots emerge to a few inches above the ground. Dead or brown blades can be gently raked out at any time.
Propagation:
Divide the clumps every two to three years in the spring. This also helps to rejuvenate older, overgrown clumps that may have started to die out in the center. With proper care, an individual plant can be expected to live for several years.
Pests / Disease:
Generally resistant to serious pests and diseases.
