Hen and Chicks

Sempervivum tectorum is a succulent commonly known as Common Houseleek or Hens and Chicks. It forms tight, evergreen rosettes of fleshy leaves, often with reddish or purplish tips, and typically spreads by producing offsets, or "chicks," around the main "hen" plant.

Care:
Light:
They thrive in full sun but can tolerate some light shade. If kept indoors, provide a bright, sunny location, ideally a south-facing window, and rotate the pot regularly for even growth.
Water:
As succulents, they are drought-tolerant and prone to root rot if overwatered. Water thoroughly only when the soil has completely dried out, typically every 1-2 weeks during the growing season and less frequently in winter.
Soil:
Use a well-draining soil mix, such as a cactus and succulent blend, or amend regular potting soil with sand or perlite to improve drainage. Ensure the pot has drainage holes.
Hardiness:
Sempervivum tectorum is notably cold-hardy and can tolerate freezing temperatures, making them suitable for outdoor rock gardens or containers in many climates (USDA zones 3-8).
